Five MacCrimmon Questions.

Three tunes MacDonald’s Salute, MacLeod’s Salute and MacLeod’s Controversy
were composed for the same occasion- what were the names of the composer and
the two chiefs for whom the tunes were composed?
The answer can be found in Masters of Piping or Alec Haddow’s History and
Structure of Ceol Mor or Binneas is Boreraig.
Donald Mor MacCrimmon. Donald
Gorm MacDonald of Sleat and Rory Mor MacLeod of Dunvegan.

What was the date of the first MacCrimmon Memorial Silver Chanter Contest,
who was the winner and what tune did he play?
The previous winners are listed in the Silver Chanter programme. 1967 Hector
MacFadyen. The tune he played is in the Piping Times report. MacSwan of
Roaig.

Who gave the Bratach Gorm for the London Competition, in which year was it
given and who was the first winner.
The answer can be found on the web site of the London competition and in the
lists of winners in the programme for the London competition. It was given
by Dr Calum MacCrimmon in 1937 but awarded for the first time in 1938 so
either year would have been acceptable. The first winner was PM J B
Robertson.

After the Falkirk competition in 1783 the winners of the 1781, 1782 and 1783
competitions played a tune in concert on their prize pipes while marching
around the graves of three Scottish heroes. Who were the three pipers and
which MacCrimmon tune did they play together?
Angus MacKay’s book has reports of these competitions and lists of winners.
An account of the 1783 Falkirk competition in John Graham Dalyell’s Musical
Memoirs described how after a grand procession to the Churchyard the winners
of the 1781, 82 and 83 competitions, Patrick MacGregor, John McAllister and
Neil McLean, marched three times round the graves of the immortal heroes Sir
John Stewart, Sir John Graham and Sir Robert Munro, playing MacCrimmon’s
Lament in concert on their prize pipes.

Identify these MacCrimmon tunes from the Canntaireachd.
Those who don’t recognise the tunes could look through the Piobaireachd
Society Collections where the Canntaireachd is printed next to the staff
notation.

Rules of the Competition

This prize draw is open to residents of the UK, 18 years or over, except employees of Bagpipecovers.com and the College of Piping, their associated, affiliated or subsidiary companies, and their families, agents or anyone else professionally associated with the draw.
The published details regarding how to enter the competition form part of the terms and conditions. It is a condition of entry that all rules are accepted as final and that the competitor agrees to abide by these rules. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.


Only one entry per person allowed. Late, illegible, incomplete, defaced or corrupt entries will not be accepted. No responsibility can be accepted for lost entries and proof of transmission will not be accepted as proof of receipt. The winner will be drawn at random from all correct entries received by the closing date. The draw will be made by an independent person.
All entries must be received by the published closing date. The winner will be notified by email, telephone or letter and their name and the name of the town/country where they live will be published. The winner will be notified within seven days of the published closing date of the prize draw. The name and town of the winner may be disclosed to anyone who writes within one month after the published closing date, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope to Bagpipecovers.com, 24 Victoria Road, Whitehaven CA28, United Kingdom.
The winner may be required to participate in publicity. Note that by entering into this competition you agree to have your name released as the winner, should you be drawn as the winner of the prize.
There is one prize.
The prize consists of one week’s accommodation in Portree, Isle of Skye and, subject to availability, two tickets to the Silver Chanter competition. Transport to and from the accommodation and any travel during the week is not included and is at the expense of the winner.
The prize will be awarded to the winner within 28 days of notification, unless the winner is notified otherwise. The prize will not be awarded as a result of improper actions by or on behalf of contestants, illegal or otherwise.
The prize as published is available on the date of publication. The prize is subject to availability and to any published restrictions. The prize is non transferable and there is no cash alternative.
Events may occur that render the prize draw itself or the awarding of the prize impossible due to reasons beyond the control of the Promoter and accordingly the Promoter may at its absolute discretion vary or amend the promotion and the entrant agrees that no liability shall attach to the Promoter as a result thereof.
Scottish law applies and the exclusive jurisdiction of the Scottish Courts shall prevail. The Promoter is Bagpipecovers.com and the College of Piping.
